Wesley Snipes was charged with a count of conspiring to defraud the United States, one count of knowingly making a false and fraudulent claim for payment against the United States, and six counts of willfully failing to file federal income tax returns from 1999 to 2004. Snipes filed a fraudulent tax refund in 1996 for $4 million and a false tax refund claim in 1997 for $7.3 million. He was released on $1 million dollar bond after pleading not guilty. The trial started in January 2008 and a month later a jury acquitted Snipes of conspiracy charge and filing of a false claim with the government charge, but he was found guilty of the three counts of failing to file a federal income tax for three years. As a result, he was sentenced to three years in federal prison.
